What Is Retargeting and How Do You Use it?

Have you ever browsed for some new shoes online, and then the next thing you know, you start seeing ads for those exact same shoes EVERYWHERE? Nope, it's not magic. Those are retargeting ads and you should be using them in your marketing strategy.

What Is Retargeting and How Do You Use it?

For most websites, only 2% of their traffic actually takes the desired action before leaving the site. After everything it took to get them there, they just leave.

What if we told you that there’s a way to get them back?

This is where retargeting comes in. Retargeting, or remarketing, is a tool that can help capture the 98% of customers who did not convert (make a purchase or complete a desired action) right away. Retargeting is a cookie-based technology that followers your website visitors all around the web by using a JavaScript code (sometimes referred to as a pixel). This code is typically placed into the footer of your website, although it's only visible on the back end of the site, it's a pretty important code because every time a new visitor comes to your site, the code drops an anonymous browser cookie. With this code, after a visitor that has left your site can start seeing ads that direct them back to your site immediately.

Retargeting Channels

There are a few different ways you can serve retargeting ads, and understanding the difference between them is important.

These are the three different retargeting channels you can use in your retargeting campaign.

Google Retargeting

The Google Display Network is massive and retargeting through Google is a great way to stay top of mind and be found again.

Google allows you to adjust your remarketing ads based on the specific products and pages a user viewed during their visit to your site. As a result, you can design tailored and efficient ads that target specific audiences and demographics to increase your conversions and revenue.

Social Retargeting

It’s no doubt that social media is a dominant platform, so chances are, you can find a lot of your non-converted traffic on one of these networks. With social retargeting, your ads show up on the social network feeds, like Facebook or Twitter, of previous visitors to your site. This combines the benefits of retargeting as well as audience segmentation with the flexible, personalized ad messaging offered by social advertising.

Dynamic Retargeting

Dynamic Retargeting is a great option for E-Commerce websites! Dynamic retargeting allows you to create a single, easy-to-update product inventory feed that places retargeting ads based on the exact products your users have viewed, rather than showing a generic remarketing ads for your business, the user will see a product ad for the specific items they’ve already looked at, such as a certain pair or shoes or a certain type of watch!

If you want a better conversion rate, use retargeting.

Retargeting is one of the best tools to use if you’d like to see a higher conversion rate, whether it is finalizing their purchase of your product or signing up for a trial version. Every time your customer sees your retargeting ads, your brand gains traction and more recognition, making retargeting all that more appealing.
